Examples from the Book


In Chapter 6 of LS2 (at p. 84), there is a reference to Devon Agent, software that searches large data sets and returns graphical results. Here is an example of the results of a search for Brown v. Board of Education using Devon Agent.

You can see on the left hand side of the results window shown above that the software provides a relevancy ranking of automatically generated related terms. You can see on the right hand side a graphical representation of the relationship between these terms. Clicking on one of the other words in the diagram brings that one to the center and shifts the rest around to indicate the new relationships. What is important about this sort of tool for legal education is that it could significantly improve legal research methods and results. It is only a matter of time before the leading online research services begin to incorporate this sort of technology into their offerings.
